“Sending my baby off with dignity.”
These volunteers with Angel Hearts, transpose their grief into the act of sewing burial gowns for angel babies who passed away prematurely.
One in every four births in Singapore, ends in miscarriages or stillbirths. Most often, these angel babies have to be buried in baby
clothing that is too big for them. To address this, a group of women formed Angel Gowns Singapore in 2016, painstaking repurposing donated wedding gowns into tiny pieces of burial clothing known as angel gowns.
So far, Angel Gowns — now known as Angel Hearts — has given close to 1,000 gowns, wraps, bonnets and beanies to bereaved parents, sewn by dedicated volunteers.
The gowns are given to parents through major hospitals in Singapore. Parents could also request for gowns to be delivered to them if they are already discharged from hospital.
Angel Hearts now offers sewing courses for parent volunteers who wish to sew and help make angel gowns. It also plans to hold grief recovery programmes run by professional counsellors to further support grieving parents.
